Follistatin 315

Activin-Binding Protein, FSH-Suppressing Protein, FST-315, FS-315

Follistatin-315 is the predominant circulating isoform of follistatin, a glycoprotein that binds and neutralizes TGF-β family members like myostatin and activin to promote muscle growth and regulate various physiological processes.

How It Works

How It Works: Follistatin-315 acts as a high-affinity antagonist to members of the TGF-β superfamily, primarily by binding to activins and myostatin, preventing their interaction with receptors and thereby regulating muscle growth, inflammation, and other cellular processes.

  • Myostatin Inhibition: Binds to myostatin, inhibiting its activity and promoting skeletal muscle hypertrophy and hyperplasia.
  • Activin Neutralization: Sequesters activin, blocking its signaling pathways involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.
  • TGF-β Superfamily Modulation: Interferes with other ligands like BMPs, influencing tissue development and repair.
  • Circulatory Effects: As the main plasma isoform, it provides systemic regulation without strong cell surface binding.

Activin B Induces Noncanonical SMAD1/5/8 Signaling via BMP Type I Receptors in Hepatocytes: Evidence for a Role in Hepcidin Induction by Inflammation in Male Mice.

The study shows that a protein called activin B can raise the liver hormone hepcidin, which lowers iron levels during inflammation. The peptide follistatin‑315 blocks this effect, keeping hepcidin from spiking when the body is inflamed. The work was done in mouse liver cells and in mice given inflammatory triggers.
