Researchers improved a skin‑lightening peptide (decapeptide‑12) by attaching a fatty (palmitate) chain, which makes it more oil‑friendly and helps it stay in the skin longer. Adding common skin‑penetration boosters like oleic acid or menthol helped the modified peptide get deeper, while tiny microneedle patches helped the original peptide but not the boosters. The combined tweaks could let DIY users achieve therapeutic levels of the peptide in skin without needing prescription drugs.

The cream was applied nightly for 24 weeks, then stopped for four weeks. Participants using the cream showed better improvement in skin dark spots, melasma, and fine lines than those who only used cleanser and sunscreen, and the benefits lasted at least a month after stopping.

A 16‑week open‑label study in 33 Hispanic women with mild‑to‑moderate melasma found that a skin‑brightening routine containing a 0.01% decapeptide‑12 cream, an antioxidant cleanser, a 20% buffered glycolic‑acid lotion, and SPF 30 sunscreen was safe and cut the melasma severity score by about 60%.
