Hemp seed extract as a catalyst for cell proliferation via IGF-1 and growth hormone signaling: Increased natural regenerative potential of muscles.

Kang. Dong Young DY; Kwon. Yunkyeong Y; Kim. Hyo Tae HT; Cho. Jaehoon J; Jang. Kyoung-Jin KJ

Key Findings

  • 200 µg/ml hemp seed extract was non‑toxic to mouse muscle (C2C12) and embryonic (C3H10T1/2) cells
  • The extract increased IGF‑1 protein levels and activated the JAK2/STAT5b signaling pathway
  • Activated STAT5b bound to IGF‑1 DNA without causing DNA damage, indicating a potential regenerative effect

Practical Outcomes

  • Hemp seed extract may be a safe, food‑based option to modestly enhance IGF‑1 pathways and aid muscle recovery. Biohackers could try adding hemp seed powder or a standardized extract to their diet, but should treat it as a supportive supplement rather than a replacement for proven training or IGF‑1 therapies, and watch for any personal response.

Summary

The study found that an extract from hemp seeds can boost the body’s own IGF‑1 signaling in mouse muscle cells, which may help muscle repair and growth. While the work was done in cell cultures and not in people, it suggests that hemp seed products could be a natural way to support muscle regeneration, though exact dosing for humans isn’t known yet.

Abstract

Hemp seeds provide a nutritious food source. They contain proteins and essential minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, iron and zinc. These nutrients contribute to health benefits, including the support of cardiovascular health, blood pressure regulation and boosting immune function. To the best of our knowledge, however, their influence on cell proliferation has not been determined. The present study examined the biological effects of hemp seed extract on cell proliferation. The present study examined the biological effects of hemp seed extract on cell viability by evaluating its cytotoxicity in mouse muscle (C2C12) and embryonic (C3H10T1/2) cells, and identified 200 µg/ml as the optimal treatment concentration. At this concentration, growth factor protein levels were elevated, and the phosphorylation of the downstream JAK2/STAT5b signaling pathway was increased. The extract promoted phosphorylated STAT5b binding to insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 DNA without causing significant DNA damage. These results suggest that hemp seed extract supports muscle regeneration by stimulating IGF-1 signaling via the JAK2/STAT5b pathway.
