Research has shown the efficacy of hair growth factors in hair regrowth. We describe the intradermal injections of a recombinant, bioengineered hair formulation, containing growth factors, into the scalp skin, for enhancement of hair regrowth and evaluate its efficacy.
The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of the hair growth factor formulation in reducing hair loss and enhancing hair growth.
This was an open-label, prospective, single-arm interventional pilot study in which 1000 patients were given intradermal injections of a hair formulation into the scalp skin. The formulation contains vascular endothelial growth factor, basic fibroblast growth factor, insulin-like growth factor, keratinocyte growth factor, thymosin β4, and copper tripeptide-1 suspended in a sterile injectable vehicle. Intradermal injections of this hair formulation were injected into the scalp once every 3 weeks for a total of eight such sessions. Hair pull test was performed before every session. Videomicroscopic and global images were taken at baseline, fourth session, eighth session, and 2 months after the completion of the eight sessions. Relevant safety assessments through physical examination, questionnaires, and appropriate laboratory examination were conducted throughout the study.
Significant reduction in hair fall was seen in 83% of the patients on hair pull test. Videomicroscopic image evaluation showed that most patients had a decrease in the number of vellus hairs, increase in number of terminal hairs, and increase in shaft diameter. Seventy-five percent of the patients believed that the hair injections were aiding the treatment of their hair loss, and it was also beneficial in post-hair transplant patients. At 1 year, a statistically significant increase in total hair count (P = 0.002) continued to be seen. Treatment was well tolerated.
Intradermal injections of this hair formulation may be a promising option for treating male as well as female patterns of hair loss.

Androgenic alopecia (AGA) typically manifests post-puberty, resulting in decreases in hair density, disruptions in the hair growth cycle, and alterations in hair follicle micro structure. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a key hormone implicated in hair loss, especially on male. In this study, we found that each of arginine (Arg), arterial extract (AE) or biotin tripeptide-1 (BT-1), when combined with low level light therapy (LLLT, at 630 nm, 2 J/cm<sup>2</sup>), showed the efficacy in enhancing mitochondrial functions, cell proliferation and collagen synthesis in fibroblasts. Additionally, CARRIPOWER (the complexes of AE, BT-1, Arg, and Diaminopyrimidine derivatives), in conjunction with LLLT (630 nm, 2 J/cm<sup>2</sup>), showed promising results in dermal papilla cells (DPCs). The promising results contained not also inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-6) and cell pro apoptotic factor (TGF-β2) reduction, but also Wnt pathway inhibition by decreasing DKK1 level, and pro-hair growth factors (vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and β-catenin) increase. This innovative combination therapy offers a potential solution for the treatment of AGA, addressing both hormonal and cellular factors involved in hair loss.

We determined the effect of sera enriched with the soluble complex of complement (SC5b-9), on hydraulic conductivity (Lp) of single pulmonary venules (diameter 20-30 microns). Sera free of anticoagulants and blood cells were prepared from rat and human blood. Lp were determined by our split drop technique in isolated, blood-perfused lungs prepared from anesthetized rats (2% halothane; Sprague Dawley, 500 g; n = 73). Zymosan-activated (ZAS) and control sera were used for Lp determinations. In ZAS prepared from human serum, SC5b-9 concentration was > 300 micrograms/ml (control: < 1 microgram/ml) as determined by ELISA. At baseline, Lp averaged 3.4 +/- .4 x 10(-7) ml/(cm2.s.cm H2O), but it increased by 217 +/- 32% with undiluted ZAS (P < 0.05). The Lp increase correlated significantly with different ZAS dilutions for rat serum and with SC5b-9 concentration for human serum. Lp did not increase significantly with ZAS prepared from heat-treated sera, C6- and C8-deficient sera; or with ZAS in which SC5b-9 had been depleted by immunoprecipitation. The ZAS-induced increase of Lp was blocked completely by venular preinfusion with the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) tripeptide (1 mg/ml, 10 min). We report for the first time that: (a) SC5b-9 increases lung endothelial Lp; and (b) the increase of Lp is attributable to an integrin-dependent mechanism.
